Maths Week - Thirsty Work!

As part of Maths Week, the Vipers applied their understanding of ratio, proportion, percentages and fractions into a real-life context in the form of creating and making a brand new flavour of juice!

As part of Maths Week, the Vipers applied their understanding of ratio, proportion, percentages and fractions into a real-life context in the form of creating and making a brand new flavour of juice!

In order to create a brand new flavour of juice, we had to think about flavours and quantities. One measure of juice was equivalent to 50ml. So depending on the recipe they were following, they had to choose different flavours of juice to mix together. When they had chosen their flavours (blueberry, pineapple, apple, orange, cranberry and tropical) they had to calculate each juice in ml, then use this to calculate the percentage and fraction of each flavour from the total amount. If that wasn’t enough, they then had to express their recipe as a ratio. Definitely thirsty work!

After all these calculations, challenging us to remember mathematical skills and apply them into a real life context, it was time to get making! Everyone made a new flavoured fruit juice, from Tropic-apple to Exotic Burst, Hawaii Delight and Berry Blast, everyone enjoyed their drink, although it wasn’t time to sit back and relax just yet… The Vipers enjoyed their juice whilst completing ratio and proportion word problems!

What a fantastic opportunity to apply our learning and understanding Year 6!
