Bringing Science to life: Digestion

Ever wondered what happens to your food after you have swallowed it? Year 3 spent the afternoon learning all about the digestive system.
Ever wondered what happens to your food after you have swallowed it? Year 3 spent the afternoon learning all about the digestive system.
One of the many questions we had was what happens to all the food we eat? Today Year 3 learnt exactly what happens. We recreated an experiment using the following objects.

First we had to ‘swallow’ the food. We used the clear bag to represent the stomach. Into that we placed crackers, orange juice for the stomach acid and water for the saliva. Sounds delicious.

Next came the mushing. This was the fun part. Be careful not to squish too hard or you will end up with exploding bags. We learnt the food then travels through the large and small intestines. The nutrients from the food are then absorbed into the body.
