Can crops grow in space?

With Harvest celebrations fast approaching, Year 6 decided to link their Space learning with our Harvest celebration assembly contribution.

With Harvest celebrations fast approaching, Year 6 decided to link their Space learning with our Harvest celebration assembly contribution.

Split into groups, we all focused on different elements: What is Harvest? How do crops grow? Can crops grow in Space? The Harvest Moon and writing our very own prayers.

When researching, we found out about the 'Harvest Moon'. We took great interest in this as we are currently writing non-chronological reports about moons in the solar system!

Here is what we found:

The name 'Harvest moon' dates from when farmers needed bright light to extend the working day. The full moon would light up the night sky and give them more light to work with - allowing them to gather in the crops in preparation for winter.

This year's autumnal equinox came on September 22nd, making tonight's October 5th full moon the Harvest moon because it is the closest full moon in the calendar. It's happening tonight! We couldn't believe how fortunate we were to discover this just in time! This year's Harvest moon will be at its brightest at around 7.40pm this evening, October 5th.

If the weather is clear, we should get an amazing view of the full moon. Good luck looking out for the Harvest Moon - if you see it, take a photo! We can share them in Harvest assembly!
